ATNS raises awareness about neuroplastic symptoms, their role in chronic pain and illness, and the most effective evidence-based treatment methods with resources for practitioners and the public.
The Problem.
Millions Suffer from Chronic Pain & Illness
The Solution.
The Science of Neuroplastic Treatment
Pain Science Paradigm Shift
The groundbreaking science of chronic pain (and other symptoms) is explained by scientists who did the research, clinicians who put it into practice, and patients who experienced the life-changing benefits.
The New Science Behind the Symptoms
In patients with 10 years of back pain, after four weeks of Pain Relief Psychotherapy, 66% had pain scores of 0-1 out of 10.
In a study of spine surgery, among patients with the highest number of adverse childhood experiences, the surgery was unsuccessful in 85%.
In a study in Los Angeles, 67% of older male veterans with chronic pain achieved at least 30% pain relief with Pain Relief Psychology.
In a study at Harvard, 64% of people with chronic back pain became pain-free after six months of Pain Relief Psychology treatment.
Neuroplastic Symptoms (NS)
When high levels of stress are not fully recognized, the brain and nerve system (“Neuro”) can generate real pain or illness anywhere in the body. This occurs in many people with strong, healthy minds and affects one in five adults and two in five patients. These symptoms can be changed (“plastic”).
Nerve Pathway Changes
Research shows NS are associated with altered nerve pathways in the brain. These occur in people with stress, trauma, and unprocessed emotions that often (but not always) are linked to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs can be anything you would never want for a child of your own.
Knowledge Becomes Healing
Fortunately, new scientific research shows that Pain Recovery Psychology achieves far better relief of neuroplastic pain and illness than older approaches.
4 out of 10 people seen by physicians suffer from neuroplastic conditions.

The Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms (ATNS) is a nonprofit corporation led by medical and mental health practitioners, researchers, and patient advocates. Our Mission is to educate practitioners and the public about applying the latest scientific research to diagnosis and treatment of neuroplastic pain and illness. We also advocate for providing the same availability and quality of care for neuroplastic symptoms as for any other form of illness.
Painful Numbers.
20% of U.S. adults (over 50 million people) experience neuroplastic pain or illness. Most are not receiving the same quality of care as people with organ disease or structural injury.
In 88% of people with pain in the spine it is neuroplastic (generated by the brain) and not from structural damage.
16% of adults have endured four or more Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). These increase the risk for developing neuroplastic symptoms.

Science Based.
In a referral-based pelvic pain clinic, 47% reported a history of physical or sexual abuse in childhood.
Common Symptoms
People often have more than one neuroplastic symptom, they can move around the body, and they can persist for years. Below are some of the many types of neuroplastic symptoms.

Fibromyalgia
Migraine or Headache
Long Covid
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Pelvic Pain
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Functional Neurologic Disorder
